That said, indeed framework re-targeting probably shouldn't be done lightly, although I am guessing ClickOnce would take care of pulling in the new prereq automatically if we changed to 4.0 and the user didn't have that yet. (The code I forked was a VS2008 solution targeting 3.5 and IIRC VS2008 can't even target 4.0 normally so I'm guessing the published version is indeed 3.5, unless you had an uncommitted conversion.)

All in all, I think if we want to gear up for possible Windows 8 support or other notable developments, it may make sense to go with the v2 route now as a separate download path, w/targeting .NET 4.0 (CF?) right from the start. (If it wasn't clear, the list I made are things that I'm thinking about doing, not things I've done yet. Except 10-key as numbers, which I did today.)

I'll PM personal info. :)

New Post: Review patches?

Very cool! I’m a *little* afraid to touch this code just because it’s been fine for literally YEARS and there’s
THOUSANDS of people using it…by that I mean, if we do publish a new version with ClickOnce, the whole world could fall apart. I don’t even know if it’s 3.5SP1 or 4.0 now. I suspect the former.

I’ll take a look at this code this week and see if it’s cool. I’m sure I can commit it all and test it (although the framework version issue is a big one…maybe this is BabySmash v2 (like a separate
download, rather than upgrading all clients – thoughts?))

FYI – Me and another guy are considering a BabySmash Windows 8 version as well. He’s got a JS version. Where you located? I’m trying
to figure out how to coordinate this new interest.

Next up, I'd like to make sure things I work on (if I continue) are likely candidates to be pulled. Let me know if any of these are something you wouldn't want to pull:

* Upgrade to VS2010 or VS2012.

* Actually target .NET Framework 4 (CF) as the hanselman page suggests is a prereq.

* Adding pentagon.

* Having the 10-key pad show numbers instead of shapes.

* When detecting a typed word, animating the letters into the word and speech-synthing the word instead of the letter (excluding a blacklist of bad words).

New Post: Review patches?

Why not fork the code?

A short queue of the letters pressed could be kept, and do a dictionary comparison looking for short words (or the above custom words) recently typed, so if a (sanitization-safe) word is typed then the word is printed and spoken too.

There could be a pentagon shape.

The eyes/faces on the shapes could be randomized instead of always having the same eyes and mouth on each shape.

The shapes could enter with a variety of entrance effects, such as "zooming in from tiny spot" or "slide in from random edge of screen" or a random combination of such effects (including the current spin-in).

Specific key(s) could do more specific/interesting things, like shatter one of the existing shapes on screen (Spacebar?)

The simultaneous preparation of speech could be better throttled (IE ignore some speech if the active speech set is getting too large) to avoid large smash sequences from resulting in speech lag then a sudden burst of overlapping speech. (Maybe that's more a bug report.)

New Post: KeyUp/KeyDown, Playing wav

Doesn't doing this work better?

Thank you for a nice program, my 2-year daughter loves it :)

Occasionally, she press a key and holds it, but nothing happens until the key is released.

I have traced the issue to MainWindow.xaml.cs, method OnKeyUp();
By replacing it with the event OnKeyDown I was able to make response to key pressed almost immediate
but this required another adjustmet to avoid too many duplicates; so I have added delay of 1 second between them.
This behavior is now more similar to most editors.

static DateTime dtPre = DateTime.MinValue;
protected override void OnKeyDown(KeyEventArgs e) {
DateTime dtNow = DateTime.Now; TimeSpan ts = dtNow.Subtract(dtPre);
if (ts.TotalSeconds > 1) {
base.OnKeyDown(e);
e.Handled = true;
controller.ProcessKey(this, e);
dtPre = dtNow;
}
}

On similar topic, was there a reason to use p/invoke to detect keyboard events (KeyboardHook.cs)
Since you are closer to Windows source, I am guessing there may be some advantage to avoiding managed code?

I have also observed that you are using p/invoke (dllimport) to play wav files (audio.cs)
this is done in a separate thread for each call, and wav files are stored as resourced in exe.

I was using managed code like this for similar tasks:
using (System.Media.SoundPlayer sndplayr = new System.Media.SoundPlayer(sWavFile)) { sndplayr.Play(); }

Was there some reason to use p/invoke for playing wavs, and to place each in separate thread?
